The Account No One Knew Existed

A client came to me after her father passed away. Going through his files, she found a life insurance policy she’d never heard of, opened decades earlier, premiums paid for years, and never mentioned to anyone. It had gone unclaimed for three years, sitting with the state, before she found the paperwork by accident.

This happens more often than people think. An estimated $70 billion in unclaimed property is currently held by states across the country, waiting for rightful owners, including old bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stock, and insurance payouts. Most of it isn’t the result of carelessness. It’s the ordinary byproduct of a life with multiple jobs, multiple banks, a name change or two, and accounts that quietly went digital and stopped sending paper statements.

Assets go unclaimed for simple reasons. A job change leaves behind an old retirement account. A move means a final paycheck never catches up with you. A death leaves family members working from memory, without a full list of what their loved one actually owned.

The first step is easy: every state maintains a free, searchable database of unclaimed property, and unclaimed.org links to all of them. Search under every version of your name, in every state you’ve lived or worked, and there’s no cost to claim what’s yours.

That search solves the past. The more valuable work is preventing this from happening to your own family. When I build a plan with clients, part of that work is a full inventory: every bank, investment account, retirement account, and insurance policy, with account numbers and institution contacts, kept current and stored somewhere a trusted person can actually find it. Small habits help, too – updating your address with each institution when you move, and consolidating accounts where it makes sense, so there are simply fewer places for something to slip through.
